Excel MOD Function – Finding the Remainder

The Excel MOD Function is one of the Excel Formulas that is great to know, when you need to make calculations or lookup values that are buried in your data or simply compare values or format them. So learning which ones to use and how to use them is imperative if you want to bump up your skill level.

Definition of the Excel MOD Function

The Excel MOD function returns the remainder after a number is divided by a divisor. The MOD function is a built-in function in Excel that is categorized as a Math/Trig Function. It can be used as a worksheet function (WS) in Excel.

Excel MOD Function

SYNTAX of the MOD Function:

  • =MOD(Number, Divisor)
  • =MOD(Cell, Cell)
  • The values put into the MOD function, or the value in the cells it refers to, must be a valid number, otherwise you will see this error. (#VALUE!)

  • =MOD(13, 67) = 13            13 / 67 = 13
    67 does not divide into 13, so the answer is zero, with a remainder of 13.
  • =MOD(67, 13) = 2              67 / 13 = 5 with a remainder of 2
    13 * 5 = 65 and 67 - 65 = 2
  • =MOD(NOW(),1) = Current Time
    The NOW Function returns the current date and time. Using MOD, you can isolate
    only the current time. The cell needs to be formatted for Time to be displayed right.

Why Would You Use The MOD Function?

Lets say you have a loan for $7653.00 and you want to find out how many payments you have to make, if you pay $300.00 per month. Take $7653 / $300 = 25 payments, with a remainder of $153.00 left over. Now you know that you have to make 25 payments at $300 and your last payment will only be $153. Here is the formula: =MOD(7653, 300) = 153

While it can be rather easy to calculate the remainder of any given calculation, you simply can't go wrong using the Excel MOD Function. This function, as well as the many other funcitons that Excel supports makes your life much easier in the long run.
